Friday night dinner –

 

We met our wonderful friends, Graciela and Alain at our “usual” restaurant, La Coup de Torchon, at 7:30 on Friday night.  For us, it was about a 6 minute walk; for them, it was over an hour and a half drive, as they were gracious enough to drive in from their lovely home in St.Leu-la-Foret, a suburb of Paris.  It was SO great to see them again!!!  

 

We first met when we rented Graciela’s incredible apartment just down the street from the restaurant way back in 2006, when we spent a month in Paris prior to following the Tour de France.  Ah, that was a lovely spring and summer!  And we are still trying to convince them to visit us in Tucson!

 

Graciela is originally from Bolivia, and she and Alain and some friends spent six weeks there this fall.  She showed us their photographs of their tour of the country, and truly – they were incredible!  I know Graciela is a wonderful photographer, and she certainly had a lot of stunning scenery to work with!  Between the stars at night, the snow-capped mountains and the lakes – it now has us thinking about a possible upcoming trip!  Wow!

Dinner at La Coup was, as usual, excellent!  They have a basic set menu, but everything everyone ordered was wonderful!  At least ours was!  For starters, I had their onion soup – so nice on a cold night, and R had their salad with “fresh” cheese (cubed, dried and white; nice and sharp), lettuce, olives and avocado.  Main course for R was a beef skewer with an incredible Roquefort sauce, and for me, a plate of boeuf bourguignon.  Then, for dessert, more tarte citron for me, and fresh cheese (Robbie likes it!) with red fruit for Robert; again, this time, very tasty and tangy but sweet.  All in all, a truly outstanding meal!

 

So sorry to have to say goodnight, but they had a long drive back to St. Leu, and we need to get up and going in the morning!!  So!  More later!

Up this morning about 8 to another gray day, but while it evidently rained during the night, it looked at least to be clearing a bit this morning.  We had had such a nice late lunch yesterday at  La Reserve  that neither of us were hungry for dinner last night, so we munched on cheese and salami, and that was it.  So, dinner tonight will be our roast chicken from the market, with the roast potatoes and green beans.     I did want to get to the bank this morning, and for preference, wanted to find a  BNP Paribas , as their ATM’s usually ask if you want a variety of bills, rather than all 50’s…which is what we prefer (50’s occasionally being hard to change).  So, found a  BNP  about 5 minutes away from the apartment, so decided to head their first and then see if we could find a café close by where we could get some breakfast; failing that, we figured we would stop at a patisserie and get some croissants and bring them ...

Hello from Paris!

Sorry for not blogging last night, but as with all well laid plans, our has had a change!  So, not knowing exactly what to say, I said nothing yesterday and waited until we actually had something to say.  As it turns out, Robert has had a slight urological glitch on the radar that we have decided was serious enough to require our returning home now rather than in two weeks.  We’ve decided that it didn’t require immediate doctor’s attention – he feels fine – but we didn’t want to wait until we got medical advice.  So … we drove back to  Charles de Gaulle  from  Nimes  today.  It was cold – about freezing, but clear, which was nice.  We drove up through Lyon – in fact, we drove along the  Rhone  and actually right next to the  Musee des Confluence , where the  Saone  and the  Rhone  meet; it was fun to see Lyon again, which we very much enjoy!  From there, it was ba...

Allo from Nimes!

And it’s not FREEZING!  Yay!  Up this morning about 8, and packed up and ready to go about 9:30 am. Believe it or not, around the snow piles, there were folks in their own private jacuzzi’s on the patios!  We thought they were crazy, but possibly that’s because we didn’t have one ourselves and we were just jealous … but honestly, I think not!  As Robert reminded me, though, we liked our Altadena jacuzzi best in the wintertime … but not in the snow, believe me!  At any rate, our first stop was to top off the gas at the  Carrefour  next door, and then we were on our way to  Roquefort .  As it turns out, today being Monday, much of France is closed … and the particular cheese shop that we particularly wanted to visit –  Gabriel Coulet , was of course, closed on Monday!  Oh well!  So, instead, we went to  Societe , where we had visited several years ago, and finally (after much sear...
